Led by Arthur Hill, Kate Reid and David Wayne, this film is a mesmerizing view of what could happen if unknown forces even the most ingenious scientist were unaware of are let loose. An entire town is wiped out by some mysterious force, and it's up to the military, who is gone in there to claim a nuclear warhead try to figure out what it is. Part sci-fi, part mystery and all good, this thriller is mesmerizing from start to finish with a compelling plot line, interesting characters and magnificent special effects, surrounded by an amazing technical team that presented its audience with a real nail biter. Sure, it's a real slow burner, but it does wonders for the intellect and the ending is as exciting as they come.
It's a mystery but a different kind of one - a fresh-feeling scientific mystery. I watched this again on blu-ray and found it a lot better this time around. Still, it definitely picks up for the race-against-the-clock climax, and it's not often these days that you see something genuinely fresh and original in the sci-fi genre, so I can see why it holds the status of a minor classic. I have to admit that this wasn't one of my favourite movies some of the middle section seems a little stodgy with not much happening to further the plot. Almost the entire film takes place in a remote installation and the claustrophobic setting becomes a character in itself. Of course, the tension soon ramps up when it becomes apparent that they're working against the clock. In any case, this is a thoughtful, slow-paced sci-fi mystery in which a team of experts try to work out the nature of a killer virus that may have come from space. That's no surprise given that the source material came from a Michael Crichton novel viewers will note plenty of similarities between this and the likes of WESTWORLD, for instance. THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN is a sci-fi movie with a difference: there are no light sabres here, no outer space travel, instead this is a thinking man's thriller. Things we have on planet earth is where the cure comes from. And ironically it's from some of the most plentiful It is race against time to prevent a self destruct from occuring just as are fourĪre finding answers. Robert Wise got a lot of tension out of this film, especially at the climax when Theįour have to race against time to come up with an answer. The story behind Michael Crichton's science fiction novel and the movie is thatĪ small northern California town has been wiped out by a new strain of virus. Robert Wise made the daring decision not to cast any big name stars in TheĪndromeda Strain. Just don't be put off by the occasionally glacial pace and the slightly silly ending involving lasers and nuclear detonations. Regardless, it worked well and the movie was fascinating. Plus, a lot was already spent on special effects and equipment for the movie. This was good because it heightened the realism of the film, however I think the practical reason for this is because Crichton was not yet famous and the studios really didn't want to commit huge money to the film. Arthur Hill, James Olsen and David Wayne are these very recognizable but generally unheralded actors.

This is because the stars are people who usually were supporting actors in movies and mostly TV during this era. "The Andromeda Strain" features actors who are very familiar but whose names you won't readily recognize.

A crack team of scientific experts are then mobilized in a high-tech and super-top secret base to find out what caused these deaths and how to stop it from potentially destroying everyone on Earth. A space probe launched by the US has crashed there and inexplicably the townspeople all appear to be dead. It's obvious that this Michael Crichton story is not marketed to the same mass audience as his "Jurassic Park". Why? Well, the film is very slow-paced, crammed with scientific jargon and has nothing but supporting actors-no big stars. However, I also realize that it's not the sort of film that many, if not most, would not particularly enjoy.
I like this film and have seen it several times.
